This 245' Ocean Class Research and Dive Support Vessel, complete with 2000' rated manned submersible, offers potential buyers a wide range of possible uses. With air conditioned accommodations capacity for a crew of up to 85, the vessel has an operational range of 12,500 nautical miles, a cruising speed of 12.5 knots and an endurance factor of 90 days continuous.

Originally built in 1965 by Cantare Navale Apuania in Carrara, Italy, she was purchased by the Canadian Navy in 1977 for conversion to serve as a dive support and submersible launch vessel, carrying both the Pisces IV and SDL-1 submersibles.

She underwent two complete re-fits to adapt her to her present configuration. The first, in 1978, lengthened the ship to 245 feet and added the A-Frame and hangar facilities. A subsequent mid-life refit in 1989 replaced the original superstructure and diesel electric power plants with the current configuration of three Detroit Diesel 12V149's to provide superb redundancy, reserve capacity and acoustic isolation. To date, these engines have fewer than 4500 hours total time.

Both re-fits and all bi-annual maintenance cycles were conducted to NATO mil-spec requirements. A complete T&I was also performed in 1997, prior to the ships decommissioning. The auxiliary generator of 250KW capacity has recently been re-engined with a CAT 3406b to replace the original Dorman 8QT diesel.

All main engines, auxilliary generator, propulsion motors, KaMeWa CPP box and steering systems are all fully operational.

Ship propulsion is provided by 3 Detroit 12V149 Diesel engines each driving 650KW generators. These are coupled via the ships main bus to two Marelli DC propulsion motors which in turn drive a single shaft with a KaMeWa CPP box and variable pitch 4 blade propeller. Total available shaft horsepower is 1900SHP.

The three Detroit diesels are fully operational with under 4500 hours total time each, which is less than 30% of their expected lifespan. Both Marelli motors were removed for overhaul in 2007/8.

The 250KW KATO auxiliary generator was recently re-powered with a Caterpillar 3406b to replace the original Dorman 8QT engine.

Construction

Steel hull with aluminum superstructure and submersible hangar facility.

Accommodation

Original crew complement included 12 officers and up to 70 crew in fully air-conditioned compartments. Ample refrigerated storage capacity and galley/messing facilities supported the crew on missions of up to 90 days.

The vessel supported a 20 man dive spread with full mixed gas diving facilities including a 300' rated dive bell and 6 man recompression chamber.

Ample engineering spaces and offices could easily be reconfigured into wet/dry laboratory spaces to support full ocean class research vessel operations.

Equipment

The 2000' rated five man submersible was built in 1971 by International Hydrodynamics Corporation and underwent quadrennial overhauls during it's 12 years of service, including a complete refit prior to decommissioning in 1997. Some of the more significant upgrades included conversion to brushless DC thrusters, addition of lateral and vertical thrusters, addition of the large main viewing port and improvements in the command sphere layout.
